“Shels: I’m getting married in 13 weeks! I’m starting the eat clean diet and want to stay on track with food, supplements & weight training but I travel almost every other week for work. Any practical advice to keep it up while on the raod 50% of the time where I can’t cook and alot of business dinners are in the cards while Im away?”
First, Thank you so much for writing me. It means so much to me when I am able to help others and inspire them in any positive way!
Staying on track in general can require some discipline, and when traveling even more! After 3 years of competing and eating clean, I have finally learned how to juggle the lifestyle of being a jetsetter and eating clean. H aha jetsetter not yet but soon;) When I first started competing, I didn’t realize that turning pro would lead to more traveling. I love traveling, however when your dieting it can be challenging to stay on track. Especially when every time your at an airport most likely there is going to be a lot of unhealthy food. So I have compiled a list of things to pack, quick and easy recipes, what to do when I can’t cook and tips to keep me on track when I am out of town.
When I go out of town I always make sure to be prepared for the weekend. Remember friends preparation is key!
THINGS TO PACK:
Cinnamon ( I either put it in a mini container or ziploc)
Stevia -liquid and/or powder ( I bring both and carry the liquid in my purse that way if I pick up coffee anywhere , I always have 0 calorie sweetener on hand)
Low Sodium tuna pack bags ( my favorite is Albacore White Tuna by Starkist)
Mustard packets
Oatmeal ( I like Gluten Free organic rolled oats and I fill it up in a ziploc bag)
Justins individually wrapped almond butte
Almonds ( if you don’t have self discipline to only snack on them ,rather than eating the whole bag then I would stick with the nut butters or put however many almonds your supposed to eat in a ziploc)
Protein Powders( meal replacement and snack form)
Protein bars
Bowl
Plasticware
THINGS TO PACK WHEN THERE IS NO STOVE OR MINI KITCHEN:
mini blender
mini wafflemaker
BREAKFASTS:
Before checking into my hotel I always call and request for a refrigerator and microwave.I carry a big lunchbox cooler and keep things refrigerated in my lunchbox if there is no refrigerator. If microwave and refrigerator are not an option, I use the hot water for my oatmeal from the coffee maker machine and let the oats soak in a bowl or cup until they are edible . If I can’t make my eggs , for protein source I put whey protein powder in my oatmeal. One of the first things I do before heading to my hotel is find the nearest supermarket for eggs(unless I brought boiled eggs) , gallon jugs of water, and any little necessity I need that I forgot to pack.
WHEN ORDERING AT RESTAURANTS:
I understand sometimes it can be a pain to be the only one making a “special order” but who is going to wear your wedding dress for your special day? You are! So whatever you gotta do to make it happen, do it! Everywhere you go they usually have salads, chicken, and vegetables. I like to ask for things a la carte.
Meats -cooked without seasonings and/or butter
vegetables-without seasoning and/or butter
Dressings- balsamic vinagrette (on the side) and/or lemon
GYMS:
Most of the time the gyms in hotel aren’t my favorite on the list. Since I have an Iphone, I use my Around me app and search the nearest Golds gym or 24 hr Fitness. Thats the benefit of having multiple gym memberships hehe. If that isn’t an option I just tough it up and have my “partyo session” in the hotels gym.
Within the last year I have traveled almost every weekend and sometimes it is every weekend. I understand it can be tough but hey thats what seperates us from others.:) So get to it, no more excuses, and get what you want. You want to look absolutely stunning on your wedding day so like Nike says…JUST DO IT!
In order to achieve it you must stay determined … Motivation will only get you so far. It’s your determination that will help you achieve you goals. So see it, believe it and ACHIEVE IT!
